Shale is a rock that contains organic material and when burned, yields a combustible product called shale oil. Shale oil, because it has a wide range of uses, is often called "petroleum".
Shale oil is found in different parts of the United States, but is most prevalent in Wyoming, where it comprises about 90 percent of the in place hydrocarbon reserves. Although the economically recoverable amount is small, approximately 6 billion barrels in the United States, the world reserves of shale oil is estimated at an enormous total of 1.3 trillion barrels.
